At last, an opening to other areas of the world such as the Middle East, and Asia. This month, Israel, Lebanon, Russia, Mongolia, Laos and Afghanistan rhythms the newsletter reading. A great job of new sources research of information has started 3 months ago is at its origin. I can finally share it with you.

The objective of DEWS is to reduce morbidity and mortality through detecting early and responding rapidly to outbreaks of infectious diseases and other unusual events. DEWS provide surveillance data in a timely manner and supports an initial response. The system also contributes to disseminating public health information and capacity-building of other health departments and nongovernmental organizations working in communicable diseases surveillance and response. - Method - Small clustered surveys, for evaluation of Vaccination Coverage - Mali

- Cluster surveys can be used in resource-poor settings, when population figures are inaccurate. To be feasible, cluster samples need to be small, without losing robustness of results. The clustered LQAS (CLQAS) approach has been proposed as an alternative, as smaller sample sizes are required. VC estimates provided by a 10 x 15 cluster survey design were reasonably robust at local level.*

OIE has donated 50,000 rabies vaccines to Laos.  “Thousands of people and animals die of rabies each year while we have efficient control methods available; the Regional Vaccine Bank for Rabies was developed because dogs are responsible for more than 95% of human cases and vaccination is an effective way of controlling the disease at the source” OIE Director General, Dr Bernard Vallat commented. *
